What happened to Robert Monroe? Was he encountering an external reality beyond the physical world? Was his mind constructing an astonishingly coherent altered state? His account gets darker before it gets stranger. Earth becomes a Garden. Living beings produce Loosh. Suffering and emotional intensity appear to matter. Monroe is horrified by what he thinks he has discovered. Then comes a warning that changes the entire investigation: perhaps the experience is one thing, while the human translation of that experience is another. Loosh becomes connected with love. The farm begins looking like a school. Humans move from being harvested toward participation, development—and even “graduation.” But does any of that actually solve the moral problem?
