Manufacturing the Transgender Threat: They Made Us the Enemy.

For years, transgender people fought simply to be seen—to tell our stories, live openly, raise our families, work, serve, and participate in society as ourselves. But something happened as transgender visibility grew. We became more visible, while the actual transgender person became harder to see.

In our place, a different character emerged: the transgender threat. Bathrooms. Sports. Children. Healthcare. Drag. Violence. “Gender ideology.” Mark and Lynna trace how political organizations, media figures, advocacy networks, rhetoric, and eventually government policy helped construct and amplify an image of transgender Americans that many of us do not recognize as ourselves. Transition Radio Show presents: Manufacturing the Transgender Threat: They Made Us the Enemy. This isn’t a detached conversation for Mark and Lynna. They’re transgender. They’ve lived through this transformation. And they’re asking a deeply personal question: How did transgender people go from asking America to see us to being portrayed as something America needs protection from? Mark transitioned in 2003. He spent years helping people understand transgender lives because he believed visibility could break down fear. More than two decades later, he and Lynna are watching transgender Americans become the subjects of executive orders, passport restrictions, healthcare investigations, political campaigns, national-security language, and an extraordinary amount of public fear. But behind all that machinery are actual human beings. People who work. People who serve their country. People who love their families. People who get tired of waking up wondering what changed overnight. In this episode, Mark and Lynna investigate the institutions and rhetoric—but they also tell you what it feels like when the political argument stops being about an abstract population and starts being about you. Manufacturing the Transgender Threat: They Made Us the Enemy — on Transition Radio Show. Mark and Lynna aren’t pretending to be neutral observers, and they aren’t asking you to accept their conclusions without evidence. They’re asking something more fundamental: Before you decide what you believe about transgender people, are you responding to actual transgender people—or to the boogeyman someone built in their place?
